A concussion is a complex injury, affecting the brain, that is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head. Concussions can also occur from a hit to the body that causes the head to move rapidly and the brain to twist or bounce within the skull. This sudden movement can cause cells within the brain to stretch or shear, altering the way the brain normally functions. A concussion can happen to anyone, at any age with symptoms varying for each individual. Symptoms may include: headache, nausea, dizziness, balance issues, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, blurred vision, sensitivity to light/noise, feeling sad or irritable, difficulty remembering, and/or difficulty sleeping.
If you have experienced a concussion you should consult your physician as soon as possible for medical evaluation. We recommend that you then book an initial post-injury assessment with Lori Mercer, our Shift Concussion Management Certified Provider. Lori will complete an in-depth, post injury assessment, and provide you with an individualized concussion management plan to aid in your recovery.
Baseline concussion testing is also offered at InMotion Health Centre for athletes age 11 years and older. Measuring an athlete’s “normal” level of functioning will allow Lori to better gauge the level of impairment that may exist post-injury through comparative testing. Comparing an individual’s post-injury test scores to their own baseline test scores is considered to be best practice. This allows for a more accurate, objective assessment of the injury and allows Lori to develop a concussion management plan that best suits the athletes rehabilitation needs.
